Experience Design

My work reflects my intention to design for communities by committing to develop interventions for purposeful framing of the needs of the community and its consequent impact on community engagement. The conventional discourse around industrial design often favours capitalist structures, mass-manufacturing, developmental feasibility and profitability, with its impact on people being considered secondary in nature. The constant assumed expectation for people to adapt to objects, instead of objects adapting to people’s needs, encouraged me to change my perspective towards my design practice. Diverting from individualistic expressions of imposing solution-oriented, mass-manufactured products onto individuals, I wanted to develop interventions catered to the specific requirements of communities as informed by their lived experiences. Consequently, my views transitioned into seeing design as a participatory activity, for communities as cohorts of diverse users, therefore altering my approach to the design process itself. I believe stakeholders are co-creators and active collaborators in the design process, and maintaining a culture of continuous engagement and feedback allows for a more holistic design process. All of my projects include a deeply rooted process of discovery, synthesis and design with individuals within the community and those that engage with it. My process of designing is based on the foundational idea of trust reciprocity and building networks of strong relationships in communities as evidenced through my portfolio of community-driven adaptable interventions.

How can we design for and with communities?

How can we design for and with communities?

Over the course of the year, my projects aligned with my personal intention of designing for communities committed to developing purposeful framing of the needs of the community and the impact of community engagement. The Reimaging Campus Food project was conceptualised and conducted by identifying stakeholders to serve as partners in collaborative creation with a culture of continuous engagement and feedback. Rhapsody, a game design project involved a deeply rooted process of discovery, synthesis and design with members within and those that engage with the community to develop designs for survivors of domestic violence or intimate partner violence. My final project, Blank Canvas, was based on the idea of trust reciprocity and building networks of strong relationships in communities (both online and offline) of Alzheimer's patients and their caregivers. Regardless of their variety in outcome, my community driven approach has been crucial to each project.
