Systems Thinking Maps For Ux Dark Patterns

Abstract

This project employs a systems thinking approach to dissect the complex web of factors contributing to the propagation of unethical UX dark patterns in the design industry. It begins by questioning the assumptions and biases that allow these dark patterns to flourish.

Drawing upon principles of interrelationships, synthesis, and feedback loops, it delves into the root causes and interconnections underlying the prevalence of dark patterns. By mapping out the ecosystem of design practices, user behaviors, business incentives, and ethical considerations, the project uncovers the emergent properties and causal loops perpetuating the use of dark patterns. It reflects on the systemic issues that fuel deceptive design tactics, challenging conventional perceptions and highlighting the ethical implications for both designers and users. The systems thinking maps provide a comprehensive approach that enables stakeholders to recognize the interconnectedness of design decisions and their wider implications, fostering a more conscientious and ethical approach to UX design practices.

Through this exploration, the project prods at the fundamental question: how can we dissect the assumptions behind unethical design practices to create more ethical and user-centered solutions?
