Geoquest Board Game
Abstract
Geoquest is an educational board game designed to teach 8th-grade geography interactively. Developed by Ayushi Agrawal and me at Paper Crane Labs in collaboration with Resurrection High School, the game's goal is to become the wealthiest player by buying states and collecting fees.
The game addresses challenges like the lack of interactive learning methods and the subject's data-heavy, theoretical nature. We started by understanding these issues through interviews with 8th graders at Resurrection High School. After exploring various approaches, we settled on a board game format. The final phase involved user testing and iterative improvements, such as adding customizable elements to fit curriculum needs.
Geoquest combines physical components (board, tokens) and conceptual elements (rules, strategy) to engage students. It transforms geography into a dynamic and engaging experience, fostering creative thinking and social skills. The project challenges traditional teaching methods, embraces uncertainties, and adapts to student needs, epitomizing an innovative approach to education that encourages meaningful engagement and positive societal impact.
