This project emerged from an illustration workshop where we learned to combine images to create visuals. Our task was to design a poster for a band, and I chose Alt-J. For their album An Awesome Wave, I aimed to reflect the band's experimental and layered style, which blends catchy tunes with mysterious lyrics. The design concept for the album cover of Alt-J's An Awesome Wave stems from their music's paradoxical blend of catchiness and lyrical ambiguity. Inspired by the album's diverse themes and the unsettling beauty of its tracks, the cover seeks to capture the essence of tentativeness, over-stuffing, and captivating messiness that define Alt J's unique sound. This artwork comes alive when experienced through the Artivive app.

Visual Elements:

The central focus of the cover is a close-up image of a child's mouth indulging in an abundance of candy, symbolizing the immediate allure and superficial sweetness of Alt J's music upon first listening.

Upon closer inspection, viewers discover a hidden layer beneath the sugary surface: people and children trapped within the candy, expressing a range of emotions from joy to anguish.

The juxtaposition of innocence and captivity mirrorîs the contrast between the catchy melodies and cryptic lyrics of the album, inviting contemplation on the complexities beneath the surface.

Hovering above the scene is a figure of a lady surfing, seemingly oblivious to the turmoil below, echoing the album's themes of detachment and unawareness amidst the chaos.
