Abstract
The film What’s Behind that Smile delves into the lives of two single mothers, Anila and Triveni, as they navigate the challenges of raising their children solo after losing their husbands. Anila represents the upper-middle-class sector, while Shoba comes from the lower-income sector, showcasing different perspectives on single motherhood.
Through various sections like Introduction and Background, Challenges and Triumphs, Support Systems, Financial Struggles,Voices of Resilience, and Navigating Parenthood, the film uncovers their stories of resilience, strength, and perseverance.
These stories highlight how individuals find inner strength and connect with others during tough times, offering a glimpse into their struggles, triumphs, and the support systems that sustain them. By sharing these narratives, the film not only sheds light on the realities faced by single mothers but also fosters empathy and understanding among viewers, encouraging them to connect with and support others in similar situations within society.
LEARNINGS -Understanding diverse experiences of single motherhood, from socioeconomic perspectives to individual stories, provides a nuanced appreciation of the unique journeys and complexities each mother faces. This project fosters empathy and human connection, teaching the importance of approaching subjects with sensitivity and building trust to elicit honest narratives.
