The Shadow

Abstract

Context: The Shadow is a game designed in collaboration with Veda Shetye, to help individuals navigate the complex emotional landscape of trauma. The concept of the game is to physically move away from the shadow of one's trauma by exploring different coping mechanisms (symbolised as berries) and escaping metaphorical puddles of shame and guilt. We believe that working through different coping mechanisms can result in building a resilient relationship with one's mental health. We hope that this game helps players identify and articulate their coping strategies. Conceptualised as an emotional outlet, the visuals in the game are rendered to stabilise moods. The primary user group for this game includes individuals experiencing emotional trauma and stressors, and those seeking to understand their coping mechanisms better.

Dismantling Process: In the process of creating The Shadow, we examined the complex issue of emotional trauma and the various coping mechanisms individuals might employ. We empathetically explored the emotional landscape of trauma and the feelings of guilt and shame often associated with it.

Empathetic Exploration: We designed the game as an emotional outlet, aiming to help players identify, articulate, and navigate their coping strategies. The visuals in the game are carefully crafted to stabilise moods, offering a supportive space to explore feelings and reactions to trauma.

Innovative Solutions: The Shadow represents an innovative approach to addressing mental health. By creating a game that allows players to navigate their emotional trauma and explore their coping mechanisms, we offer a new way to engage with and understand mental health.
