Sahara - Walking Cane
Abstract
A thoughtful walking companion crafted to support our senior citizens in their daily mobility. This special cane is tailored to enhance the physical well-being of the elderly, making their daily activities more comfortable and fulfilling. The research entailed an in-depth examination of existing walking canes on the market, identifying design gaps, reviewing previous studies in the field, and understanding the medical implications related to this topic. Due to geographical constraints, the research then proceeded with conducting telephonic interviews with users from the target audience.
The cane, specifically designed for those aged seventy and above, features advanced multisensory technology. It includes various proximity sensors, a vibration sensor in the handle, audio feedback, an SOS flashlight, and an emergency button for immediate assistance. This multisensory design aims to protect elderly users from tripping or falling, significantly reducing the risk of serious injuries.
The motivation for this project arose from witnessing my grandparents frequently trip and fall while using their walking cane. I noticed the cane didn't provide adequate support and they often couldn't detect objects on the floor due to vision problems. The ideation process included approximately 100-150 design iterations. To better understand the user experience and the shortcomings of current designs, I also personally tried using a walking cane.
