Rewilding Mahe - SMI
Abstract
Rewilding MAHE was a project focused on restoring the natural environment and actively promoting biodiversity on the MAHE campus. We created a website to track precise weather data for the campus, addressing the issue of inaccurate data from other weather platforms. By using Arduino sensors, we aimed to provide conservationists with accurate information about temperature, humidity, wind, and rainfall, which is crucial for determining the right native species of flora to reintroduce to the area. Understanding the weather patterns helps ensure the chosen plants will thrive, increasing the chances of successful rewilding. Moreover, the introduction of native plant species serves as a foundation for attracting and supporting diverse fauna. As these plants grow and flourish, they provide essential food sources, nesting sites, and shelter for various insects, birds, and small mammals. By addressing local environmental concerns, the project demonstrates how collective action can lead to tangible solutions. This not only benefits the immediate surroundings but also inspires a broader shift in perspective towards ecological harmony. The project showcases the relationship between human actions and environmental well-being, revealing the potential for even small-scale initiatives to spark larger conversations about individual roles in creating a sustainable future.
