Design Computation
My work is driven by a desire to dissect and understand human perceptions. By delving into the 'why' behind our understanding of the world, I attempt to uncover the biases that shape our perspectives. The intent behind my work is to foster a deeper understanding of underlying mechanisms and to encourage viewers to question their preconceptions. For example, “Unmasking Surveillance” addresses Facial Recognition technology in India from a caste and class lens, highlighting how poverty intersects with caste, making these systems a proxy for the state's interest in surveillance and prejudiced constructions of criminality. My creative process is characterised by a deep commitment to research and dialogue. This iterative process of questioning, reflecting and adapting is central to my practice. My position is grounded in the principles of design justice. I recognize the power dynamics inherent in design, believing it is not neutral or apolitical. My work aims to address systemic imbalances. My approach focuses on resonating emotionally with the audience, provoking thought and inspiring action. My intended audience includes individuals and communities who are impacted by the issues my projects address. As a creative practitioner, I often ask “and?” and “but?” which is how my work sits within ourcollective PGDP portfolio.
My line of inquiry delves into the fundamental aspect of human perception: the 'why' behind our understanding of the world. Through a series of explorations, I aim to uncover layers of assumptions that shape our perceptions and challenge them through design research. Through my projects, I encourage a continuous dialogue that transcends initial assumptions, inviting viewers to question, reflect, and engage with the underlying mechanisms of perception.
