Contemporary Art Practice
In a world where diversity often feels like a shattered kaleidoscope, my design work endeavours to stitch together threads of inclusivity, accessibility and community engagement, creating a cohesive tapestry of shared narratives and collective empowerment. Many people find comfort in spaces that prioritise inclusivity, accessibility and community engagement. These spaces connect diverse experiences, fostering understanding and empathy. Inclusive design acts as a bridge, transforming them into places where stories are shared and communities grow together. My work is about creating these sanctuaries and understanding the principles behind them. By developing tactile books for the visually impaired, setting up platforms for community storytelling and designing engaging brand identities, I use design to weave together diverse personal experiences. Each project is a way of challenging and expanding how we perceive and interact with our environments. Through the “Color Beyond Sight” project, I created tactile books to help the visually impaired experience colour, fostering inclusivity and accessibility. The “Narrative Kitchen” project amplified community voices in Kochi, providing a platform for sharing unique stories. In the “Crumbs and Co” branding project, I designed visual identities for a bakery startup, demonstrating how design can enhance community engagement by connecting with the audience on a personal level. Through these efforts, I aim to question and redefine the attitudes, barriers and unwritten rules that shape our collective experiences. By integrating sensory experiences and narrative elements, my work seeks to build connections and create spaces where every voice is heard and valued.
My projects in the second semester have been shaped by my interest in developing a discourse around inclusivity, accessibility and community engagement. My line of inquiry is an extension of a common question that my projects attempt to answer. Colour beyond sight explores the concept of inclusive design by developing an experimental colouring tactile book. The Narrative Kitchen project was intended to discover and share stories within communities in Kochi, amplifying voices and narratives that may otherwise go unheard by creating a platform for community members to share their experiences and narratives. Crumbs and co, while not directly addressing inclusivity or accessibility, demonstrates how design initiatives can contribute to community engagement.
