Experience Design
As a learning practitioner, my need to offer an immediate solution to problems was impulsive. I realised that this problem existed because of the lack of exposure I had, which was encouraged by my comfort bubble. The first project in my PGDP year helped me understand that this problem comes from the lack of realisation of my positionality within the larger world, so I started extending the boundaries of my comfort zone. Throughout the course, I aimed to be open to new experiences and gain exposure to different communities and their struggles. I started experimenting with new methodologies and processes that would allow me to look at each problem with a different lens. I primarily focused on understanding the complexities of communities that differ from mine. This includes struggles, societal conflicts, socio-economic dynamics as well as conflicts that exist within oneself. Through different forms of investigation, I was exposed to the different perspectives of individuals. I began to understand myself better and understand my positionality within these communities. With each project, I began allowing myself to reflect on my biases, my conflicts from within and my overall understanding of struggles and problems. It begins with a spark of curiosity that pushes me to investigate, and with each process of investigation my focus shifts from the problems of the community to developing an empathetic understanding of people's experiences.
With each project, I've embarked on a journey of self-discovery and growth, deliberately pushing myself beyond my comfort zone. I've embraced challenges that once made me nervous, turning them into opportunities to uncover my strengths and weaknesses. Through exploring diverse research methodologies, delving into sensitive topics, and immersing myself in communities unlike my own, I began to reflect on my positionality within various contexts. By embracing discomfort and engaging in a systematic process of personal challenge, I began to view the world through a different lens, fostering a deeper understanding and empathy for perspectives different from my own.
